By living in America, you are given rights that protect your individuality. The first amendment protects an individual right to state their opinion without any problems. The three types of freedom of speech are pure speech, speech- plus, and symbolic speech. Music is considered pure speech which is strongly protected by the government. So if this is true, why is an artist's music censored? The art written by a musician should not be censored.
Starting as early as the 1700s, music has been censored. The first song banned in North America was "Song made upon the Election of new Magistrates to the City." In 1927 power was granted by federal officials to suspend people off the radio who use profanity on the air. A couple of years later, the Federal Communication Commission was created. They are responsible for overseeing what is said and what is played on the radio.

Music is said to be a big factor that young people rely on , especially with the topics that a musician may choose to sing about. “i make a lot of music about the struggle. Ion mind going thru the struggle this just another one ya heard me.” (Kevin Gates). Many musician write about what they have been through during their life. “It’s not a coincidence that music censorship in America began to accelerate during the 1950s, when traditional and conservative values began to unravel.” (Hall). When young people get to a certain age, they try different things, so you can’t just blame their behavior on the music they listen to. “Sex and drugs were no longer hidden and secretive acts, but something to be exposed and celebrated.” (Hall). In this generation, sex and drugs are not such a big secret as it was back in the day. All children have to do is turn on the TV or listen to older people talk and they are suddenly exposed to the same subjects in uncensored
