Ithaca College Percussion Concert Report

Unoccupied stage occupied with only percussion instruments inside of Ford Hall. A sea of people continues to fill the vacant chairs surrounding me inside of this vast auditorium to hear the Ithaca College percussion ensemble. The audience gives the impression that this hall is being filled by music major’s and families just eager to support their loved ones spilling out with joy. I was so surprised that there were so many young audience members that were not music majors that had just come to hear the percussion concert. Though out the performance you can witness that the audience is so intently listening almost as if nothing could ever break their focus but the conclusion of the music. Sitting there even just before the performance started I had my stereotypical expectations about what I …show more content…
I am so grateful to have been given this as an assignment and going to something that lit up not only my perception of percussion concerts but also my brain. I could tell that this concert was enormously significant to a great deal of people and the performers seemed to have truly worked hard and it was a beautiful experience to notice it all pay off. I have heard plenty of people tell me that I truly ought to go hear some of the music performances that Ithaca College has to offer and I thought they are saying that either because they are involved or they are staff and they are trying to get a more cumbersome audience. But, now I understand that they were genuine and I will now be telling other people exactly what they have been telling me, recommending this percussion ensemble that we have right here on campus. This was the complete opposite of all my expectations of this concert. They were clothed in entirely black which to me is a professional attire for a concert but this was exciting and not boring as I thought it would be. I know more just from just this one percussion ensemble

On Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 8:00 pm, I have attended a performance by Joy Harjo and her friends Mitch Taylor who played the guitar, Dave Copenhaver who played the bass guitar, and Smiling’ Vic Gutierrez who played the drums and vocals. I had specifically chose this performance to do my report on because I wanted to feel what actual Native American music would be like in concert as opposed to what we naturally think of when it comes to Native American music. For me, that would include heavy drumming and dancing, which are usually even-pulsed with a variety of vocables. Not to my disappointment, the music was unique in its own way and had spoke directly to me.…

On May 10th, I had the opportunity to the “The Stony Brook Roots Ensemble. This was my first experience witnessing traditional American music played live. The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. The performance took place in the Wang Center Chapel, which had surprisingly great acoustics than expected. At the orchestra there was very strict etiquette when in attendance, where one must be incredibly quiet in order to not disturb anyone else.…

As the show progressed, more and more people danced to the front of the concert hall or even went on stage to dance with the band. The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra was not an exclusive group, but they invited others to enjoy the music with them, which allowed the performers to become closer and more connected with the audience. This reflects the ideology of music in African cultures because the separation between the performers and the audience is nonexistent. The orchestra certainly allowed the opportunity for a bridge to be built to the audience. Another similarity between the performance of the orchestra and African music performance was the performer’s dance.…

Was it really true that we would perform in such a big event? We all looked at our instructor, and his face was enough to tell us that this was no joke. He further explained that three other drumline would be joining us, and that we would begin practice at Center Grove High School in the coming month. When the time came, my friends and I eagerly step foot into a new band room, and perhaps our greatest musical journey began. For many weeks, we continued with business as usual, working to perfect our school’s show for competition.…

Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…
