Music Night Research Paper

Looking back, I never thought this day would arrive so fast. Not the day of writing the self review, but Music Night. I can remember looking at the white-board as Mr. Snodgrass was writing down the date of the performances, and thinking about why he was bothering to tell us about them so soon. The two months really did pass quickly though, and before I knew it, it was December 6th, and Music Night. While I would normally not be pleased about time moving so fast, in this case I really cannot say that I have any complaints; Mr Snodgrass informed us of what was coming very early on, and he worked with us every day to prepare for it. All those hours practicing with the class paid off and I am very proud of my Music Night performance. I performed the three pieces, Innovation, Whispers, and …show more content…
This piece required the saxophones to blast, without squeaking, the first and last quarters of the song, which is just what I did. I tried to emphasize on the accents as much as possible without sounding like a duck shouting ( I do not know if that is the greatest example but a duck shouting, in my head, sounds like normal duck noises mixed with the sound of the horn of a big truck). Then came the part we had the most issues with in the rehearsals. The famous “are you rushing or dragging?” part. I played my part well and everyone played theirs. It sounded nice and had good timing (my opinion). Then, at bar 74, I tried to be as musical as possible, meaning applying the right dynamics, keeping the phrases, and giving a direction to every bar. It sounded nice. Not the greatest I had done, but I was happy with it. (my hands moved, and that means I did a good job…). Then came the saxophone blasting part again, and then the ending, which was also done very well (by me and everyone else). We ended the performance very nicely, walked off the stage and felt good about ourselves

The group that I will be reviewing in this paper is the student combo that I enjoyed most of all, the group that performed first and was directed by Dr. Routenberg. The group consisted of Andrew Fiorini on the trumpet, Noah Johnson on the trombone, Meghan Walls playing the piano, Andrew Moser on the electric bass, and Collin St. Mary on the drums. Regarding the music…

Our diction was done nicely, we were very percussive when singing the “du-bing du-bang du-bong”. “Begin, My Soul” was our strongest piece vocally. Our balance in this song was presented nicely, the men voice parts blended nicely with the ladies. The balance in the seconds though, was not good. Our intonation in the mid-section had many individuals sticking out.…

The Cistercian monks pursued their desire to become closer to God through loving him, and the Troubadours pursued their unique desire to express sexual love, which was new for their time. The Troubadours described this feeling of sexual love as Fin'amors; a sexualized devotion towards spiritual love. However, this feeling was considered to be sexual pollution by the Gregorian Reform, and thus became a complication for the Troubadours. The social context in which the text by Bernard of Clairvaux, On Loving God, the poems of Guilhen de Peiteu, “I would well like most people to know,” and “I shall write a new little song,” as well as Jaufre Rudal's, “He who cannot be a singer,” were produced have limited the Troubadours' expression of love in…

I chose to do Angels in America because I had heard of it before, and as I was searching through the Tony Award’s for the Best Play’s, looking for something impressive to perform, I saw a familiar name and decided I would give it a go. Originally I wanted to do a piece by Prior, but as I read the play I liked the idea of trying out Roy’s character more, so I changed it. My goal was to capture what I imagine was Tony Kushner’s idea of the character and portray him correctly, and also to determine whether I could play a confronting, very stubborn man such as Roy. I did some research on Roy’s character and found he was based off the actual Roy Cohn an American Attorney, well known for his prominent role in The Rosenberg Trials.…

For the rest of the song, the trombone player and Armstrong exchange vocal lines. Towards the end of the song, they are solely scat singing. The back-and-forth reminds me of the discussion we had in class about having impromptu conversations. The two musicians are really playing off of each other’s words. The walking bass and drums set up a consistent beat, with the piano harmonizing and clarinet almost playing as a “third-wheel” to the two vocalists.…

Wesley and I chose the poem “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost. This poem is about two neighbors that are divided by a stone wall and in thes scene, they are meeting to repair the wall. One neighbor doesn't understand the need for the wall since there are no animals to fence in and their trees are different. The presentation to our classmates went very well and we were very calm. We were to memorize our intro and try to as little as possible, not look at the poem.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…

As I spent the evening perusing for the Christmas songs, I landed in the trap remixes of Christmas music. Although I enjoyed plenty and even discovered a good playlist on Spotify, I still had to settle with what I consider a classic: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee. Plenty of songs cause me to feel the Christmas Spirit, but that song in particular makes me remember elementary school. Since my household is relatively scarce of Christmas music or decorations, I didn’t feel the Christmas season until I entered elementary school. The center of the school was a large display of a Christmas tree and several other decorations.…
