Music, known as the world’s “universal language,” is something that is used in many different forms to convey various forms of emotion. For example, music can convey emotions through the usage of the film industry with the composition of film scores. Furthermore, orchestral music serves as a form of music in which emotions can be conveyed as well. Though rarely seen, music can also convey emotion to those who sneak illegal drinks, such as men and women did in the Jazz Age. Though words can fail to express emotions at times, music conveys emotions in forms such as film, personal experiences, and historical ages.

I’ve been playing an instrument since the fourth grade, and all through fourth grade to present day, I’ve been in the band program at my elementary, middle, and high schools. With being with the band program since fourth grade, I have played a number of various pieces thus far, each conveying different emotions. Since I am a person that is very drawn into pieces that have a more cinematic feel to it, the piece I played fro my seventh grade wind ensemble year entitled “Escape From the Deep” stands out to me even to this day. This piece was based on the survival of nine Navy officers from drowning in the sea. Throughout the piece, the composer included notes predominantly in the lower register throughout the whole band when the piece first began. In doing so, the piece conveys the emotions of seriousness and solemness. As the piece goes on, the composer includes higher register notes for the upper woodwinds to create a chaotic mood of the Navy officers trying to escape the sea, layered with the low brass having parts that are repeated to create a foundation that is stable. As the piece comes to an end, the low brass, percussion and trumpet sections come in with accented notes, each accompanying one another to create a heroic feeling in both the band and the audience listening. In the end, the piece aids in conveying emotion without the usage of words with lower octave notes in the whole band in the beginning, silence in the middle section with only the clarinets playing, that too in their lower octave, and a feeling of triumph and heroism as the ensemble comes together as one and all of the instruments accompany each other in layering their sounds to convey various emotions to the audience as a
