Throughout history music and education have gone hand in hand. The positive impacts music has made all around the globe is countless. According to a wise philosopher, “Music is a moral law, it gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” (Plato). Due to the lack of funding, many schools are forced to cut music programs. Although these cuts occur, many parents and education professionals are trying to convince districts to change their tune. Not only is music used for medicinal purposes, it provides educational benefits as well. Schools should have band and choir programs available to students. About 25% of teens suffer from anxiety in the US. Many anxiety symptoms affect a student's ability to learn and participate in the classroom. It can bring people of different cultures, religions, and languages together without a single word. Music is a universal language. Due to its educational benefits, many teachers have started incorporating song into their lessons. Mr. Sprinku, a US History teacher in New York, started using the musical Hamilton to teach his students history. He claims that, “It brings history into the classroom in such an exciting and engaging way” (Schonfeld). Learning not only becomes more fun, but also more productive. Student who participate in music “build attentional skills, develop processing skills, strengthens memory skills, and builds life long transferrable skills” (Jensen). Students also achieve higher SAT scores if they are involved with a form of art. Overall art education affects how students perform in other subjects.
