In history, in 325 C.E. Constantine declared Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire and spurred the development of European music, and 850 C.E. music moved from monophony to polyphony (infoplease.com). Significant strides in modern music were sparked during the renaissance era when polyphony sounds changed to harmonious sounds. Consequently, secular music became popular. Around 1600, the first Italian opera, Euridice, was performed (infoplease.com).
