One of the first things that become evident when researching the previous philosophers was the fact that each of them believed education should be for the benefit of their respective society, to make its citizens acculturated, knowledgeable members of their respective communities. The sole reason we have a public school system is because our society highly values education and what it does for the culture and its people. The arts have the ability to preserve and pass on specific things about a culture and its people with relative ease compared to other subjects within the educational curriculum. Because music is so widely available and can be engaged in at almost any point in time, in addition to the fact that it is a powerful trigger for many different types of memories, it plays an important role in the education and personal development of the individual. Going as far back as the 1900s advocates of music education in the public school system have showed that students that participated in activities like band, choir, and orchestra saw a positive correlation in many areas including higher achievements and improvements in academics, citizenship, self-discipline, and even a better sense of personal hygiene. Music also teaches a person to be more creative, adds to the development of self-expression, and it helps individuals raise their self-esteem which are all qualities that every citizen needs to be a positive member of their society. Music also furthers personal development by developing the critical problem solving and creative activities which lead to new ways of doing things, qualities which are highly valued by society as a whole. The value of music to a person is almost unmeasurable because of all of the different applications music has in everyday life with in the culture. To have a societal school system without music would be extremely detrimental to the individuals of the world and would have a long term effect on society, ultimately cause changes within the culture.
