Essay Benefits Of Music Education

Music education is bound to impact every student in a major or a minor way. Whether that student is in preschool or a senior in high school, they are likely to benefit from having music education. Music education takes large and frequent cuts in the arts department of many schools, yet it is one subject that not only builds upon itself, but other subjects as well. By participating in music programs, students develop much needed skills to be successful in the workforce. Music education benefits students intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and socially. Because of this, music is one of the most important subjects taught in schools. Students benefit intellectually by raised test scores, improved mathematics skills, and improved reading skills. A recent study done by the College Entrance Examination Board shows that music students scored sixty-three points higher on the verbal test and forty-four points higher on the math section of the SAT, compared to students who do not participate in music programs. (Judson) Students who participate in music programs also perform better in the science, writing, and math sections of the SAT, as well as having higher overall GPAs.
