Across America, budget cuts in education have directly affected music education, leaving schools with no other option, but to cut music programs. Although often times seen as insignificant, music education is an enormous aid to a student’s success. Music programs create well rounded individuals with irreplaceable 21st century skills, develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning, all this while being a beneficial art form. We cannot permit students across the country getting the opportunity to study music denied, it is their right to receive a balanced education that will benefit them outside the school setting. Or simply put into words, education that will affect the rest of their lives.

Music education is believed to help students become more successful in academics. As the 22nd century approaches, advances in science have given scientific data that music education is beneficial for students. Giving evidence that music helps stimulate parts of the brain and promote growth in areas that are not normally stimulated in an average day. As stated in an article by Music Children’s Workshop, “Recent studies have clearly indicated that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain’s circuits in specific ways.” Engaging in music education can help students acquire language easier and faster. This is extremely beneficial to students who struggle with both comprehending and orally speaking a language, an aid to alleviate the national problem a program called No Child Left Behind tried to fix, but was ineffective. It is time we start looking for ways to help students that in a couple of years will be the future of this country, and that we must invest effort and time into making the most well-rounded education a student can receive.
