9 in E minor by Antonin Dvorak. It is a classical composition that was one of the first original symphonies written in America. It is considered a major milestone in our musical development as a country. I actually recognized the piece from when I was first learning how to play the clarinet. A simplified version of the theme in the second movement was one of the first pieces I learned how to play. It made me really focus on this work because I had never heard the entire thing, which is unfortunate because the entire piece is truly beautiful. I would describe the mood as being quite peaceful particularly in the second movement but also exciting and energetic in the faster movements. The movements follow a traditional pattern with the first movement being fast, the second movement being slow, the third and fourth movements being fast as well. The entire piece plays through all different types of dynamics, often changing quickly between getting really soft and then louder. It goes between periods of consonance and dissonance, which gives it variety and makes it exciting to listen to while still being pleasing to the ear. Overall it is a very beautiful and complex piece of work and I am so glad I was able to hear it performed live and in its
