LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany. Beethoven was one of the world’s greatest composers and pianist. Beethoven was self-educated and had high morals. In his younger years of life he played for Mozart. Mozart knew Beethoven was something special. At the age of twelve Beethoven composed his first composition. Before Beethoven turned twenty two he moved to Vienna, Austria to study Haydn, where he spent the remainder of his life. He made a public debut in Vienna which he performed what is known as his “first” piano concerto in C major. Around 1803 he composed his Third Symphony, the Eroica. In 1801, he wrote a letter to his friend and confessed he was deaf. Beethoven continued to compose music. In 1808 he debuted, The Fifth Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, and was one of the most famous rhythmic ideas. Beethoven explained the four-note motive was “fate knocking at the door.” Beethoven composed more symphonies as the years passed. His last piece he composed was “The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op.125 in 1824.
JOSEPH HAYDN (1732-1809) Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in Rohrau, Austria. Joseph served in the choir at St. Stephen’s Cathedral at the age of eight. He learned to play the keyboard and violin. In 1761, he became “court musician” at the palace of Esterhazys. Haydn composed all request music by the patron. Joseph went to London in 1791-1792 and in 1794-1795 and in 1795 he went back Vienna where he composed six masses and two oratorios.
Haydn’s music of style was classical. Mozart and Beethoven were highly influenced by his style. He became a master in developing themes. In 1796, Haydn “Trumpet Concerto in E flat Major” was exceptional time history. Haydn’s last piece he composed was Symphony No. 104 in D major. He later died in 1809.
