Music Appreciation Letter

Music has been a passion of mine for many years, and recently I was given the opportunity to further use this talent to help others. Almost a year ago, the lead pianist at my church moved, and I was asked to assume the post. Although I had been playing for the children and teen services for a few years, this new volunteer position—usually held by an adult with a music degree—required much more responsibility and maturity. I decided to accept the offer, and despite the challenges, the job has cultivated personal growth. Through this experience, I am now an improved instrumentalist, a matured individual, a better team player, and a more compassionate person. Certainly, the position has helped me improve as an instrumentalist, but more importantly, I have learned much about the impact of responsibility and commitment. Each week demands hours of preparation, and these responsibilities have made me more diligent. I know that an entire congregation is depending on me, and it is not a task I take lightly. No other medium of communication can convey the human emotion as well as a song. Recognizing this connection has made me a more compassionate person. When playing for funerals, I have witnessed the comfort music brings to hurting families. The language of music reaches into every culture and bridges the generations. To include everyone equally, I make an effort to blend the diversity of the congregation by playing a variety music. For older members, traditional hymns connect them with important memories; for the younger members, contemporary music is an significant part of current culture.
