I was in seventh grade when I decided to stop playing the piano. By then, I’ve already been taking lessons for around four years. When I first started high school, my cousin (who was one year above me) told me to join beginner's band, because it's an "easy ninety-five". He also told me I didn't have to take music appreciation if I took band. There was nothing to lose, so I took my cousin's advice. A few days into band, we finally had to pick our instruments. There were only two instruments that I recognized - the clarinet and the flute, and they were all taken immediately, so I decided to just go with whatever is left and ended up getting assigned the oboe.

Everyone else usually came from a prestigious middle school and knew each other. Band and music was a way for me to connect with

I hate marching band. Leaving that trap of a class was the best decision I made in my entire high school experience. Once I had had enough of band, I joined theater. Joining theater fit my schedule well, introduced me to new people, and opened my mind to possibilities I hadn't considered before. The time I wasted in marching band was grueling.…

Plato, a famous Greek Philosopher once said, “I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” As a society, we thrive off the arts, most specifically music. No one can honestly say they have gone a few hours without thinking about, humming, whistling, singing, or even playing a song. Yes, drumming your pencil or pen against anything counts. Why would society deny their children the amazing opportunity to learn something this special?…

Ever since I can remember I have been preoccupied with music. As a child I remember obsessing over my dad's CD collection and spending lengthy afternoons just listening to them with him. My home was never silent there was always music playing in the living room, the sounds of drums being banged on or guitar amps booming from the basement. If you ask my mother she might tell you this was bothersome but if you ask me it was perfect.…

Music teachers all over the world today argue and discuss what genre is best to teach students to. A large portion of teachers usually narrows it down between two decisions in genre choice and those are Jazz and Classical. While both genres give exceptional lessons they both have differences at what’s important for a student to learn. Mastery of both of these genres would prepare someone for almost any musical situation a musician could come across but people still assume one is better than the other. History of Western Music Final Essay The History of Western Music, the idea of western music’s history in its entirety is an immensely broad subject that has captured the attention of many. Also, taking note that the changes come with the culture at the time and the culture from the previous time. As a music educator, I believe that student learning happens in several ways; many that are transferable to education in general. Based on the philosophies set forth by Reimer (2003), Elliot (1995), and Small (1998), students should be able to learn through high quality aesthetic experiences, praxial experiences where application of acquired knowledge and skill sets that are central to school to everyday life, and social experiences inside and outside the classroom to best interact with society as positively as possible. The process of learning should be presented in a natural, spiral, and cyclical way; allowing students to progress at a steady pace and feel safe to revisit or explore concepts that still need comprehension. Additionally, the process of learning should be paced to allow students to apply what they have learned in practical applications inside the classroom to make for life-long learning skills for life.…
