2nd Essay: Responding to Poetry Poetry mainly describes love, loss, and regret. However, every writer adds his or her own twist. For example, “Last Night” by Sharon Olds and “Cherrylog Road” by James Dickey deals with the same theme but are two different pieces of writing. They explore the theme of forbidden love and use imagery to show the lust between the two characters.…
This week, our class had the chance to read four interesting poems of Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, We Real Cool, Mad Girl’s Love Song, and Hanging Fire. Each of these poems highlight the important role that imagery and other poetic devices play into an interpretation of a poem and how crucial it is to understand the perceptive of a poem’s speaker. The poem I enjoyed the most this week was Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde. On the surface, Hanging Fire is about a 14 year-old who struggles with typical adolescent things such as bad skin, boy problems, school dances, and braces. However, once we re-read the poem and took the time to analysis it, it because quite clear that teenaged problems are not the only things troubling the speaker.…
Poems are the hidden reality of the everyday life. Thousands of people do not value the power and potential a poem can have. Poems can actually change the perspective and the way of living for many people. Many find poems to be difficult and extremely confusing. However, they are meant to be closely interpreted and annotated until the deeper meaning is…
In both the song and the poem, an evident message is shown that the…
Many relationships come and go, the ones that stay matters only by love from other people. The tone of the song is told by how the author feels about the piece. The author feels that love at first sight really happens and is a good thing to happen. For example, “And now looking in your eyes / I feel in my heart /…
Poetic Merit Argument When we hear a song, is it the sound of the instruments that takes us away to another world where nothing matters but the rhythm? Is it the lyrics that describe exactly what we believe, that satisfy our morose, jealousy, shock, despair, insignificance, or our fondness of joy, peace, acceptance, sensitivity, and confidence that constitute a song? Generated to develop a compelling message to all who hear the lyrics, is the fantastic song Come Alive by Hugh Jackman. A message of life, that with or without the instruments, back-up singers, and movie, is a composition of Duende containing poetic merit without the slightest doubt imaginable. Come Alive contains figurative language, rhyme, and a thematic statement, giving it solid ground to hold in a poetic merit argument.…
Beauty by the Beholder: Have song lyrics developed to become a more creative art form than poetry? Art is subjective. Music and poetry are two of the most subjective art forms, as their beauty is based upon perspective and opinion. Both music and poetry have an extremely diverse collection of works, ranging from poor to excellent and everything in between.…
What is harmless but can kill you? Elusive yet prominent. This is time, controls all things, and is the most powerful thing in existence. This is why Octavio Paz decides to write about time and some of the things that occur through time. Two of his poems titled The Street and Between Coming and Going dive into time and some of its countless effects on people.…
When a poet chooses the right word or collection of words, the reader is carried away into the world they are trying to create. The use of figurative language and imagery are elements of literature that give poets the opportunity to open doorways in the minds of those reading their literary works. They paint the picture, bring back the smells, and give the quiet pages sound. Such is true in the poems “The Lanyard” by Billy Collins and “A Song in the Front Yard” by Gwendolyn Brooks.…
A poem has many different ingredients, and like Chef Remy in Ratatouille, a poet has to gracefully blend these different elements of poetry together. Together, these create the different dimensions and aspects that a poem consists of. Each individual element of poetry plays a significant role and brings something unique to the poem, impacting the reader in a certain way. Some elements serve the purpose of conveying a more vivid picture to the reader while others create a different effect, such as causing the reader to pause and think. I will be exploring the ubiquitous elements of personification, imagery, and irony.…
Songs lyrics have evolved, which make them an equal art form to poetry. Although some may think that music is nowhere near poetry in a sense that there is no intelligence required, others would disagree. According to www.chicagotribune.com, “This is the most significant way in which songs differ from poems-they’re intended to be heard, while poems for some time have been written primarily for the eye” (Robbins, 1). Whether it is a song written about heartbreak, loss, or the complete opposite, the singer or songwriter is creating emotion for the audience and is attempting to relate the topic to people’s everyday lives.…
As expressed in an article titled “Poetry’s language,” by detecting the techniques poets use with language, it becomes easier to understand and talk about a poem1. Through reading a poem we can perceive visual images, and refine our sense…
There are many similarities and a few subtle differences between poetry and poetic music when broken down, hence the word poetic before music in poetic music. “Bleeding Me” by Metallica, and “Good-Bye” by Shirley J. Stankiewicz are similar in theme, format, symbolism and have subtle differences such as a repetitive chorus required in music. Some poems can be straight forward and say what is on their minds, but others like Metallica’s “Bleeding Me” and Shirley J. Stankiewicz’s “Good-Bye” can be a bit more difficult to decode. They are written in metaphors which can draw a much more vivid picture, pictures are worth a thousand words. Both “Bleeding Me” by Metallica and “Good-Bye” by Shirley J. Stankiewicz are similar in theme.…
Lyrical poetry is a type of poetry that emphasizes strong images and emotions within its lines to convey the poet’s central message to the reader. This is compared to narrative poetry which uses plot, characters, and setting to tell a story. While it is possible for poems to contain elements of both lyrical poetry and narrative poetry, most poems are usually either one or the other or at least have characteristics of one of these poetic categories that is more prominent. “The Heart” by Jill Alexander Essbaum, “The Author to Her Book” by Anne Bradstreet, and “This Is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams are three poems that all employ various methods of lyrical poetry to emphasize their message to the reader. These methods include different…
Written and verbal language face similar difficulties with interpretation. A poem could be translated based on literal form and semantics easily by ignoring use. This “exact” form of interpretation ultimately denies new readers the original feelings, emotions, and art that give the poem’s form and content life. Language is not only about meaning but the way in which meaning is expressed. Like an author through a poem, we all manipulate language in order to connect with others.…
