Music Analysis: Unorthodox Jukebox By Bruno Mars

Unorthodox Jukebox is an album composed by Bruno Mars in 2012 that is unique in its own way by having multiple genres instead of one. For example, “Locked out of Heaven,” the hit single in this album is a mix of reggae and funk, also it carries many 80s influences especially from the ‘Oh, Yeah, Yeah!’ that are throughout the song, whereas the song “Moonshine” is considered an R&B song with a lot of 80s influences throughout the whole song. Apart from having reggae and R&B, Mars also had included pop, rock, blues, etc. into his album.
While listening to this album one thing’s for sure, you can hear some influences from great legends, such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, etc. If you pay attention to this album and listen to it all …show more content…
The song made it feel like you were in another decade, enjoying an amazing party. In fact this songs is compared a lot to a famous 80s band in Britain, The Police. The next song,” Gorilla”, is a classic rock similar to the eighties, which gives a very raw and wild feeling, especially because the song is about “making love like gorillas.” “Treasure” is a disco, groovy, and funky party song, which brings out a dancing mode in majority of its listeners. ‘Treasure” reminds people of a slight mix of Michael Jackson and Prince, and also a one-man Maroon 5. “Moonshine” is a Quiet Storm song, a long forgotten genre used to describe soft rock infused disco that was played at night in the late 70's and early 80's. It resemblance Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, only because Mars’ uses similar sound effects in his song “Moonshine”. All these songs have one thing in common they all give an old classic feel, whereas the other six songs don’t. Songs like “Natalie” and “When I was Your Man” brings emotion rather than a classical feel of the eighties. Personally I feel that these songs would have made more sense if they were in his previous album rather than
