Music Analysis: Rossini's Music

Decent Essays
Rossini was born in Pesaro, Italy. His father was a trumpeter and his moher a singer. Young Rossini composed his first Opera at fourteen. Rossini was known mostly for his operas and his carefree spirit and good humor. He didn’t start focusing on songs until after the end of his career.
Les soirées musicales is a collection of eight solo songs along with four duets written between 1830 and 1835. Right after his last Opera Guillaume Tell in 1829. These are considered his most famous songs.
In this recital, I will only be performing three pieces from this incredible cycle. La Promesa, L’invito and La Pastorella Dell’ Alpi. In every song, Rossini employs a very different piano motif that sets the mood, returns throughout the song and is repeated

Guido d’Arezzo was an Italian Benedictine Monk born in France in the century year of 995. Guido was not a composer during this time, instead he was a musical therapist and teacher. Although he was not a composer, Guido made the discovery of a new form of music notation after moving to Italy where he also worked for Bishop Theobald, despite the fact that he was a music therapist and teacher ("GUIDO D'AREZZO"). With his new discovery, this method made it possible for composers to record their music on paper. Beforehand, singers and composers had to remember their own melodies and chants by memory, causing major differences within the music as they passed the music down generations ("GUIDO D'AREZZO").…

One of the most striking aspects of Signorelli’s fresco is his representation of the nude figure. In fact, the Humans being tortured by demons in the foreground (detail), Luca Signorelli, The Damned Cast into Hell, 1499-1504, fresco, 23' wide (San Brizio chapel, Orvieto Cathedral, Orvieto, Italy) Damned, along with its companion scene of the Elect (directly across the chapel on the opposite wall) seem to have been a means for Signorelli to explore the multitude of attitudes and positions possible in the human body. In the Damned, the brightly colored demons are pushing, pulling, tying up, and exacting all manner of physical torture on the sinners whose bodies are equally contorted, struggling to break free. The figures are all quite muscular,…

For my concert critique, I went to Jason Terry’s Doctoral Piano Recital on Tuesday, December 1st at the School of Music in room 206. Because Terry was able to pick the pieces he played, he picked a range of different pieces to emphasize his wide range of talent. He included older and modern pieces including Bach, Godowsky, Balakirev, Zorn, and Liszt. The first piece he played was “Prelude & Fugue, BWV 872” composed by Bach. I was a little unsure about the nature and form of this piece because it was unlike some of the more structured pieces we listen to in class.…

Partita no. 5 might have been composed at about the same time as partita no.4 for several distinctive passages in the first movement closely resembled the overture and the gigue of the previous suite. Moreover, both gigues follow the unusual scheme of opening the second half with a new subject. The first movement is designated a praeambulum, maybe because the term fantasia had already been used in partita no.3. it is probably another hand-crossing piece, like the gigue of partita no.1; the division of notes between the hands, calls for the right hand to cross over the left, reaching deep into the bass. In the allemande, a short theme containing triplet-sixteenths is developed in two-part imitative counterpoint and then inverted after the double bar.…
