Music Analysis: Hedwig's Theme By John Williams

Hedwig’s Theme” The piece I am analyzing is “Hedwig’s Theme” written by John WIlliams. It was first featured in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” titled as “Prologue”. This theme is commonly known around the world due to its catchy melody. The piece starts of on the which plays the commonly known theme we hear in the movie. Then it adds different sections of the ensemble. It replays this one more time and then the melody switches to a darker less wizardry sound. The undertones blend the piece to make it sound darker. It plays for a while but the the piece switches to the b section. The b section is a bit darker and not as light as the a section and that's how I defined the change in sections.

Assignment #3 I was very interested in the video. Overall the video gave me a nostalgic feeling, and I found it very intriguing how the actors portray how each excerpt of the piece came to be. Some nonmusical elements that I found in the in the video were simple things like the actors acting what happened and how the piece came to be. Another nonmusical element would be the narrating that is going on. Some cultural context that I noticed was Russian and Lithuanian roots in the play.…

I chose a song that everyone knows about but no one really listens to this genre and song a lot; it is “3 Little Birds” by the one and only, Bob Marley. It is one of the best, if not the best, songs from the 80’s. The reggae guru couldn’t have delivered this masterpiece any other way. Lets break it down into two parts: the lyrics and the background score. The lyrics of “3 Little Birds” promote a positive and uplifting outlook towards things/people when you listen to it, and Bob Marley’s voice helps it to soothe our minds.…

For this assignment, I had the challenge of analyzing the attributes and meaning behind Mozart’s Marriage Of Figaro - Overture. Something that I found very interesting was that there isn’t much repetition throughout the song. There are about 7 or 8 different ideas that are present in the entirety of the song, all very different from each other. It took me a little while to notice because all of the ideas fade into each other so masterfully. To begin, the piece begins with a lot of instruments playing all at once to create a heavier, rich texture.…

When I first started listening to this piece, Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major, Op. 64, “The Lark,” I was surprised by how familiar it sounded to me. I think it is well known, and has a distinct section that repeats multiple times throughout the piece, which is very well known. The strings often build up with one another to create a type of tension and anticipation throughout the movement. The piece appears to be written in ABA form, thus the listener has a clear idea of where the piece is going while listening to it.…
