Original Purpose: During our tour, our docent, Mary, shared with us that Van Gogh committed himself to an aslym in the town of St-Remy in Southern France. Although Van Gogh struggled with mental illness, he painted daily, and was the one thing that brought him joy. Therefore, the purpose of this painting was to bring Van Gogh joy during a dark period in his life. One of the things is she said that was particularly interesting is that Van Gogh felt he was a failure as an artist because he only sold one painting while he was alive, yet ironically is now one of the most famous artists of all
