The Importance of Muscle Balances in Sports:
While researching the reason behind injuries in sports , I found out that many of these injuries occur because of muscle imbalances. Human movement takes a balance of muscle strength and length between opposing muscle groups around a joint. This balance is commonly known as muscle balance. Without it a person could have a muscle imbalance which leaves them more susceptible to injuries. What causes muscle imbalances? My Food Diary in Understanding Muscle Imbalances reveals, “Muscle imbalance is the result of overtraining one muscle group while undertraining another. This can occur due to repetitive activities. This has devastating consequences that lead to APT, Lordosis, Etc. Symmetry can formulate good posture as well. Good posture keeps your balanced. Postural stability is needed to keep a person’s weight even to work opposing muscles evenly. “Postural stability ( commonly referred as balance) is defined as the ability of the body to maintain its center of gravity (COG)” (Phillip Page, Clare Frank, Robert Lardner 19.) I have three eye opening first hand accounts and evidence of the importance of muscle balance in the body. When I was in my junior year of weightlifting I loved to overload my quads. I never hit my hamstrings and glutes like I should have with exercises that could have strengthened him. Towards the end of our soccer season I tore my ACL. I was in disbelief because I had weight lifted hard throughout the year and never thought it would happen to me since I worked on my muscles. After a long summer of not knowing my ACL was torn and going to have surgery after finding out I had ruptured the ligament, I visited physical therapy. It was there I was made aware ,by a professional with a DPT, of a muscle imbalance in my lower body that caused my injury. Now I can clearly see the importance of muscular balance and how neglection was the wrong decision.
