Murlock's 'Lying': A Short Story

Decent Essays
Quickly looking up, he saw his wife wrestling with the wild beast. On instinct he reached for his rifle, but instead of shooting he smacked the side of the beasts head with it. Murlock glanced at his wife as he recalled what happened only a week ago. Murlock went out that day hunting when his wife unexpectedly asked to tag along. They had happened upon a stream and decided to take a drink. Suddenly she dropped the water that she had cupped into her hands as she had noticed poisonous berries had contaminated it. Murlock, not having a drink yet asked her if she drank any. Lying, she said no when out of nowhere a panther pounced and knocked her to the ground. Murlock swiftly grabbed his rifle and ended the animal’s life with one shot to the head.

Many people mistake the word “integrity” to hold the same weight as the word “honesty;” however, Oxford Dictionary defines integrity as: “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” Therefore, we can conclude that being honest is only a part of having integrity, so just because someone says what he or she means, doesn’t mean that this person has integrity. In “The Insufficiency of Honesty,” Stephen L. Carter discusses the misconception that many people have about the difference between honesty and integrity by presenting examples of how people that are completely honest lack a sense of moral behavior. Through a clearly reasoned discussion, Carter raises some insightful points about how honesty alone cannot make someone or some action morally correct.…

All animals hunt for survival, yet humans have developed a beastly way to make a game of it. In this sport, hunters thrive on the misfortune or weakness of others, while prey often forfeit the opportunity to avenge their attackers before it is too late. In rare occasions, the hunted will revolt and strike back, leaving the hunter astonished. This is best illustrated in Richard Connell’s, “The Most Dangerous Game,” when animal hunter Rainsford takes an unexpected journey to the house of General Zaroff, a hunter of an unusual prey, and is lured into playing a very deadly game of man versus man -- or man versus “beast.” Rainsford originally reveals no sympathy for his bounty of beasts, but upon becoming prey himself, Rainsford begins to transform…

Crucible conflict Essay In the story “the crucible” there is many themes and issues in the world, but there is one that sticks out above the rest. This theme is lies and deceit because lying was used for personal gain or self-preservation, while it cause many people to get hanged for crimes they’re innocent of or haven’t committed. For example when the girls lie to the Reverend about being forced to the ritual, next when Abigail talks to John Proctor alone, and finally when John Proctor fails to inform Elizabeth his wife about being alone with Abigail.…

Should we lie because most Americans think it's always okay to lie all the time others think it's never okay to lie. Americans are very conflicted on whether we should or shouldn’t lie. I my opinion lying is only acceptable under certain circumstances, such as sparing others feelings. Some may feel that lying is never acceptable because it is morally wrong, however, I believe lying is acceptable when it can be used to protect and care for others. Randy cohen gave an example when he said “ if your wife is going out and she asks if she looks bad you say no it would be rude not to, because if you are already out of the house she will feel self conscious.…
