Bullying is repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behaviour that is harmful and involves the misuse of power by an individual or group towards one or more persons. One out of every four students (22%) report being bullied during the school year in Australia and this number is continually increasing in society. The bullying that occurs in the film, Muriel's wedding is centered around Muriel and her father, Bill Heslop. Bill Heslop works as the Porpoise Spit council president, and he is opposite of the ideal father and husband. He continually shames, makes Muriel feel degraded and also believes that due to the shameful reputation his dysfunctional family has, he was unable to be elected for the State government.
