Sunday Night produced a sympathetic documentary about 10 innocent oil rig workers who are caught in amongst a massive storm along with the choice of the Captain on the Mermaid Vigilance a passing ship to leave the men to their death. This documentary represents the situation as it says by the title Murderous, Cowardice and heartless.
As soon as the documentary starts, it opens with a re-enactment of the men clinging to the life raft to try and stay afloat. As the documentary continues there is a voice over of the interviewer talking about a law, “An Australian …show more content…
One of these shots are the close up of the hands gripping onto the life raft in the beginning of the documentary, this camera shot is shown because it shows that the men had to hold on tightly if they wanted any chance of survival, they tolerated this for 4 long days.
The selection of the content means that the Mermaid Vigilance are represented the worst way possible. At no point during the documentary, does the audience hear the full side of the opposing story, as the Captain of the Mermaid Vigilance’s perspective was excluded. There are many reasons for this as the chief executive had declined many interview requests from Sunday Night. There may have been many reason for this but the main reason is that he knew that the Captain on the “Mermaid Vigliance” was in the wrong, but he doesn’t what to admit it as he was embarrassed by the act.
Juxtaposition is used throughout the documentary. The law that was mentioned earlier is easy to follow if someone needs saving out at sea, you do everything that you can possibly do to get them out of danger. However the Captain on the Mermaid Vigilance just left them there to
