In an entry in his diary, Munch described the inspiration for this imagery thus:

"I was walking in a small street with two friends - the sun was sinking - suddenly the sky turned red - i paused, feeling exhausted and leaned on the fence - in the fjord and the city looked livid blood and tounges of fire - my friends walked on, and i stood there trembling and overcome with anxiety - and i sensed that screams endlessly crossing in nature".

This painting later became a popular culture icon that is used in several movies, pop Any Warhol painting, cartoon The Simpsons, and various television shows and commercials. It is not too surprising since the spirit of popular culture tries to make almost all aspects of life including art into a commodity.
