From September 1st, 1969 to October 20th, 2011, Muammar Gaddafi ruled the country of Libya from his coup d'etat to the day he died. Gaddafi gained power in place of the terrible King Idris when he saw an opportunity to better his country. Although dissenters may claim that Muammar Gaddafi was a horrendous leader, he was, in reality, a benevolent figure that dedicated his life to the people of Libya and successfully transformed his country from a wasteland into a hospitable environment.
To begin, Muammar Gaddafi took a country in shambles due to Italian occupation and the Idris regime and turned it into an exceptional country. Before Gaddafi, millions of Libyans were left destitute and without basic necessities of life. In order to mend this, Gaddafi enacted many direly needed changes soon after he took office, such as an extensive web of leadership with an executive, a legislative, and a judicial branch, similar to that of the United States. Under Gaddafi, Libya became one of the wealthiest countries in Africa. Before Gaddafi, it was one of the poorest and was dependent on aid from the US and Great Britain. Gaddafi used the large amount of money being generated from oil exports to build new schools, better hospitals and to improve roadways. His policy resulted in nearly all of Libya’s populace gaining wealth and leading easier lives. Compared to King Idris, who gave the profits of the oil reserves to few, Gaddafi gave the wealth to the common man.
