Multitasking In High School Research Paper

Improved Essays
This week, we discussed school and how it felt to us over the years, and explained the real meaning of multitasking and time. To me, the most important, or rather the one that stood out the most, was the lecture on school and what our ideal school would be. To most, school then and now are completely two different sides of the spectrum. When I was younger, school didn't feel like a job I would go to eight hours a day with people I hardly knew. It was fun and it was something I didn't dread going to because I didn't have as much responsibility. As I grow older and more mature, I see teachers and adults giving students more responsibility and less time to have fun with our friends. But even our friends seem to lower in number because we don't know as many people as we did when we were younger. High school is very different from elementary, not just academically, but socially. People describe it as stressful and time consuming. It's not an argument that …show more content…
We all like to think that we can multitask and many things at once, but in reality, we are just switching what we do. Our brains can't do two things at once, it switches between them really fast and we may think we are fully engaged in both, but one of those tasks is receiving less attention. For example, reading/studying and listening to music. Many people tend to study in while listening to music, and I am one of those people. I can't go a day without listening to music and prefer it than silence. I recently found out than doing so can impair productivity. Since the brain switches from the lyrics in the song and the words in the paper, focusing on one action is strenuous work, and attempting to retain the information is almost impossible. So as my Professor suggested, I will study with music without lyrics, and/or in another language so my brain won't have to switch between the two tasks at hand, and I can focus on my

Dr. Hollowell later states that the outcome of multitasking is that “the brain gradually loses its capacity to attend fully and gradually do anything” (728). As of now researchers are figuring out how the brain changes attentions. A study published in 2001 The Journal of Experimental Psychology showed that switching one 's attention between tasks resulted in time lost. Also if a something requires major concentration like the example given texting and driving, the few seconds it take for the brain to switch concentrations can have a fatal end. In conclusion, one must learn the art of single tasking, which teaches the brain that focus, can be time efficient and result in less…

I honestly only have one activity that takes up my time ... which is watching television. Sometimes it is undoubtedly a doubt a vast distraction, which places a temporary hold on whatever I am working on or whatever needs to be done at that time. One tool I have mastered is called multitasking, I can simply just listen and still remain focused on what Is being done. Of course it's not the best, but the method works swell for me. Now if it's a quiz, test or something that's truly stumping me, I will ultimately pause the television to gain complete focus.…

“School”, a word that many young children and adults hate to hear or speak. In elementary and high school, students attend classes seven hours a day, five days a week, nine months out of the year. Going to an institution of education is a youth’s full time job. Learning becomes the only thing important in their lives and they are required to devote a large majority of their time to it. Spending almost 12 years of my life in a school, it has had a large influence on my life.…

In 2002 The United States Legislature passed the No Child Left Behind Act. The negative connotations of this act has pervaded our failing school system now for fourteen years. Students, parents, and teachers alike have all grown a resentment for the idea that, despite the effort, a student has the opportunity to fail, parents have the opportunity to bear witness to that failure, and teachers hold the considerable weight of believing it is due to their inadequacy. Individuals who possess potential for something better are squandered and placed in the general education system that any academically unprepared adolescent can comprehend. The process of moving every child along through the twelve years that they are forced to endure the school…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. What do you remember from high school? Friends, sports, pep rallies, standardized tests. You wouldn 't normally think of standardized tests when thinking of things you remember from high school, but for many students that struggled with them in high school it is a large part of their high school experience. We should stop using Standardized tests in Texas schools because they have changed the way teachers teach in a detrimental way, have delayed students’ graduations, add unneeded stress to students’ and put a strain on already tight school budgets.…

I had so much fun learning from all of the other schools. On Thursday we had a Marker Space Training, within our own school from Katie Fisher, our librarian. This training took us through what our students will be creating this year. We made our very own set of Google Glasses and took a virtual reality tour. We then talked about how in our school system many of our students will never be out of the state and have no scheme.…

High school, it can be a place where bright young minds blossom and where happiness and memories are shared but behind this façade high school isn’t exactly a bed of roses. Students are constantly preparing for standardized testing and once the test comes around more than half the students fail. Is an irrelevant test really a way to get students to move forward in their lives? Leon Botstein, President of Bard College believes that high school should be taken out in all its entirety. Botstein thinks that clichés are the major problem and that’s why high school should be erased, but is that really the major issue in High Schools these days?…

When entering junior high, we were constantly reminded by teachers, parents, and school administrators how different it was from elementary school. It was supposed to be the start of a transition from childhood to young adulthood, and though I discounted many of these sentiments at the time, looking back it certainly was. In an instant, it seemed, everyone started swearing and the hallways began to smell of a putrid mixture of not enough or too much cologne. For the first time we had to change before gym, no one really sure whether it was more socially acceptable to change in a bathroom stall or feign confidence by doing it out in the open. Talk swirled of who got their periods, who was wearing what bra size, and which boys needed to stop cultivating…
