In the article, “Multitasking Can Make You Lose ... Um ... Focus,” Alina Tugend claims that instead of multi-tasking we can learn to stick with single-tasking. The author stated in the article “that the next time the phone rings sit on the couch and don’t focus on anything else but the conversation (Tugend). She says this because she makes it well known in the article that multi-tasking is bad for others. She explained her opinion on multi-tasking by showing studies that have been done. One study was called “No Task Left Behind?” This experiment covered how people were interrupted and how they moved from one project back to another project they were working on. When I first read the article, it made me think of how much I multi-task and I can relate to some of the information that was written in the article. The first thing that caught my eye was how it said that psychologist and neuroscientist are finding that multi-tasking is causing stress. I did not realize how much stress I was under when multi tasking, but when I thought about it I could relate to this a lot because when I work I have to multi task and it can get really stressful and hard to do. Also when I’m at home trying to watch my dog and do homework I can see how stressful I got but I didn’t realize that it was because I was multi-tasking. Now that I have read the article and thought about my own personal experiences with multi-tasking I agree with the authors point of view on how we should learn to stick with single-tasking. I agree with her because multi-tasking is hard and when you try to juggle so many things it can become stressful and you start to loose track of what your doing. For example, when I’m watching my puppy and trying to do homework I don’t realize that sometimes I spend more time on taking care of my puppy then trying to finish a paper for college. Instead of trying to multi-task I should just focus on one thing and it would make it easier on myself and others if they focused on one single …show more content…
When I tried to multi-task I thought in my head the more I do at the same time the more I could get done but it became to stressful for me. I would do one half of one paper and go to the next page of homework and do the same thing I did for the first paper. I would keep doing this until I got both papers done but when doing so I would get distracted by the conversation I was having on the phone. The situation I was in then turned stressful because I kept focusing more on being on the phone then focusing on doing my homework. In the end trying to juggle three things at once took me about 3 hours to get 2 papers done. The reason behind all of this was because I was multi-tasking. If I would have just focused on one paper and finished it then focus on the other while not being on the phone I could have gotten those papers done faster. Now after reading the article about multi-tasking I am going to try to single-task and see if that works better for
