Almost 7 million Americans identified with more than one race and 1 in 18 children are born of mixed race. The multiracial population is used to acknowledge the interracial couples, multiracial families, multiracial individuals, and transracial adoptees and families. According to Brandell (1988),
“In addition to gaining knowledge however, the authors believe it is of even greater importance for counseling and other helping professionals to be aware of any assumptions or biased attitudes and beliefs they may hold about these couples, families, and individuals. Counselors and other helping professionals are not immune to and often hold the same stereotypes and misinformation about groups of people as the general populace”

Multiracial descents go through so much as to just being one race. Multiracial descents have to accept both sides of their cultures and face discrimination from people who are judge by other racial groups. Knowing that multiracial descents have to find out who they are as an individual and being accepted by their parents is extremely important. After reading and reviewing the materials, understanding that there are no actual techniques to help them is shocking. Multiracial descents are constantly growing over the years and just addressing the common questions of what you mix with, instead researchers need to dig deeper into knowing that most techniques are not going to work. The subject of racism is still highly sensitive but impacts individuals, families, and the world at large. In late May of 2013, General Mills produced a Cheerios commercial featuring a interracial family including a Caucasian mother and African American father. This commercial sparked much hate and criticism from the racist community who posted hateful comments including references to "Nazis" and "racial genocide". This Cheerios ad attracted so many angry comments online because of the racial ignorance within America. General Mills set out to make a commercial portraying the average American family.…

America has changed a lot over the years. It has been considered the “melting pot” because many races and cultures are able to come together and coexist together in peace. With many couples also becoming more integrated, this brings about the birth of biracial children. While the birth of a child is a wonderful occurrence, the birth of a child whose parents are from two completely different races can spawn confusion not only to the parents but to the child or children who are unsure about their own racial identity. As children develop through their lifespan, they experience different hurdles that could change their lives.…

Imagine you are at an art museum and you find yourself in the abstract art section, the cubism, surrealism, fauvism. You gaze at the paintings with confusion, questions, and wonder trying to figure out what they mean. You look around and catch a glimpse of others around you with similar expressions. These sights of confusion, questions, and wonder are constants in my life. Similar to an abstract painting, people are confused by my appearance, and yet I have no discombobulated body like a Picasso or Dalí paintings.…

An excellent way to illustrate a difference in culture or ethnicity is in an interracial relationship. Established on personal experience, I have concluded that interracial relationships can be very demanding and effortful, particularly when there is a great significance in cultures. An interracial couple who are both from North America may not experience as much work as what I experienced. There may be some cultural differences, but it may not be as significant as a couple from different sides of the globe. I have been in two relationships of the sort, and the first one was extremely laborious.…

Although the “relation satisfaction isn’t significantly different for interracial partners”, the biggest challenge they face is finding acceptance from not only they people who they love, but in addition to the people that surround them. A close friend of mine, takes part in a interracial relationship, her and her partner have been together for four years now. Thanks to those men and women that sacrificed their lives so that we can all be equal and not discriminated, interracial couples still are, occasionally faced with challenging situation. Using my friend as an example, they faced many difficulties when their relationship began, most of their problems originated through their parents, who “didn’t think getting involved together would be a good decision” as if it was the parents decisions to chose who they were to love. It was hard for either of their families to accept each other, one was a hispanic family, while the other one as African-American family.…

Thankfully, my partner owns a business and will likely not face a great deal of discrimination in the work place. In regards to my own career, I hope that my mixed ethnic background will not hinder or limit my future job opportunities. Our future children will also be of multiple ethnicities which may lead to encounters with racial discrimination in school. My partner and I will counter the effects of these negative social interactions by encouraging unconditional love within our family, and forming and maintaining close relationships with the members of our community.…

There will always be stereotypes and people who are not willing to accept change. Through theories like intersectionality and activists like Ivan Coyote, James Baldwin, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela, we get to learn more about the injustices that happen to others and open our eyes to someone else’s experiences. This causes change for that makes our world more inclusive and gives marginalized people a chance to do something they didn’t get to do before. It would be wrong of me to think that my gender and ethnicity come with only limitations. There are some advantages to being a bi racial female yet I will seem to face more limitations than affirmations.…

During the 1900’s people from all different countries began moving to the United States. Some of these immigrants had a harder time than others. Hispanics and Latinos from Mexico and Latin American countries began to immigrate to the United States, and with that came racial identities that they had to deal with. For example, they had and continue to have classification issues among their race, so on the census they are classified as some other race (Hispanic Population, Pg. 15).…

Race and ethnicity can vastly affect family life, whether it is through traditions that a race or ethnicity has or due to the way our population treats that group of people. There are stereotypes attached to certain groups, which can make it challenging for members of that group to succeed if people continue to label them as being a certain way. Racial inequality is another issue that can greatly affect families, especially those in minority groups. As a population, if we continue to learn to be more open and accepting, we can hopefully eliminate many of these issues. Although they may seem similar, race and ethnicity have completely different meanings.…

Interracial marriage is when two people from different ethnic groups get married. Actually, interracial marriage is much more suggested because the two couples get to know each other and get to know each other’s culture and traditions. This makes the two of them unique, but what makes interracial marriage looked down by many people is racism. Racism is a strong force, but it only took a few years to break down the barriers between people based on their skin color.…
