Feminist ideals are seen everywhere from celebrities like Beyoncé, who empower women through music, to advertisements tackling sexism. While corporations may “use feminism to sell their products,” “selling feminism” (Zeisler) raises questions as to why corporations would promote feminism in the first place. Is there a genuine support to embrace women’s rights, or are corporations willing to say just about anything to make profit off of consumers? An advertisement that sells feminism is Verizon Wireless’ “Inspire Her Mind” commercial. Verizon sells feminism by asserting that young girls can overcome sexist gender norms that limit them from pursuing “masculine” fields of study. Multiracial feminism emphasizes that not all the social oppressions women face are universal; or based solely on the experience of white middle-class women. In “Theorizing Difference from Multiracial Feminism” by Maxine Zinn and Bonne Dill, Zinn and Dill explain how, “People experience race, class, gender, and sexuality differently depending on upon their social location in the structures of race, class, gender, and sexuality” (327). In other words, gender, class and race are intersectional hierarchies that impact an individual’s ability to achieve equality depending on their racial identification and social class. In the advertisement, Samantha is a white, possibly middle-class, young girl. Like any other woman in society, she is oppressed on the basis of gender inequality. However, women of color may experience more oppression as a result of their race and class. For someone like Samantha, it may be easier to pursue a career in the STEM fields. This is because of her favored race and monetary resources that may help her pay for things such as her college education or preparation
