This is a summary of article “Treatment of early multiple sclerosis: the value of treatment initiation after a first clinical episode” by DS Goodin and D Bates. In this article, Goodin and Bates defines Multiple Sclerosis as an autoimmune disease, (an inflammatory disorder of the CNS, in which the immune system attacks and eats away the protective covering of the neurons, known as the myelin sheath in the brain and spinal cord, leaving multiple lesions). The damaged neurons cause loss of communication between the brain and the rest of the body over a period of time (Goodin, & Bates, 2009).

In addi-tion, transverse myelitis can occur. It is an inflammation of one part of the spinal cord sheath that covers the nerve cell and allows the nerve impulses travel from the spinal cord and throughout the body. Another complication is acute brain stem syndrome which is a stroke of the brainstem. Moreover, when all these single episodes in Multiple Sclerosis are combined, they form clinical isolated syndrome (CIS). After CIS patients with MS subsequently develop many incidents of immune system attacks on myelin sheath. At this point, after the second attack, patient enter the phase of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Moreover, during this phase, patients go through attacks or exacerbations that lead to increase neurological symptoms and short-term disa-bility that is usually followed by a period of either complete or partial recovery (Goodin & Bates, …show more content…
Summary 3
The following is a summary of a quantitative study, “Experiences of children and adoles-cents living with Multiple sclerosis” by Jennifer R. Boyd, and Lynn J. Millan. This article discuss-es a qualitative study conducted to understand what it is like to live with Multiple Sclerosis in chil-dren and adolescents (Boyd & Macmillan, 2005).
The authors of this article discuss the experience of twelve individuals between the ages of 8-18 who participated in a study in the form of a brief questionnaire and an interview. Since there is insufficient knowledge about the experiences of children and adolescents living with Multiple Sclerosis, the purpose of this study was to gain some knowledge, that can be used by the healthcare professionals, caregivers, and the public in large, about the effects of Multiple Sclerosis in this population (Boyd & Macmillan,
