Multiple Myeloma Case Study

Improved Essays
The symptoms of multiple myeloma consist of pain from a pinched nerve or a collapsed vertebrae, anemia and fatigue associated with anemia, hypercalcemia (too much calcium in the blood) and blood clots. Multiple myeloma can cause the patient to have a weakened immune system depending on the stage of the cancer. This then causes additional complications related to a feeble immune system such as fever, weight loss, thirst, infections, bleeding gums, mental confusion and kidney failure. Usually the common method to receive the correct diagnosis for cancer is a biopsy. Alongside the biopsy, the doctor can request to have a MRI, CT and PET scans and x-rays to determine how advanced the cancer is. Treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer.

Once these symptoms begin to appear, this means that the cancer has advanced in the later stages. Technology such as the ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are able to detect and screen to see if an individual has a tumor in their liver. Although these imaging systems assist physicians in locating tumors, a biopsy of the liver is able to confirm the diagnosis (Adamec). Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment for the cancer can begin. However, treatment for liver cancer is difficult because the cancer is not easily detected until the later stages, thus the diagnosis is seldom early.…

Surgery can be used to remove parts of the tumor in order to diagnose the stage of the cancer, which is called an open biopsy. Surgery is also commonly used to remove as much of the tumor as possible to lessen the need for other treatments. Chemotherapy is also a common form of treatment for neuroblastoma. This treatment utilizes drugs that enter the bloodstream and attack the cancer. This is a preferred form of treatment for patients whose cancer has spread into different parts of their body because the drugs are in the bloodstream and travel throughout the body.…

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is characterised by malignancy of antibody-secreting B-cells that accumulate in the bone marrow . Tumour growth promotes hypoxia in the tumour environment. Hypoxic inducible factors (HIFS) are heterodimeric proteins composed of an inducible alpha-subunit and a constitutively expressed beta-subunit. In this experiment, the hypothesis being tested was if HIF1α and HIF2α regulate different genes in multiple myeloma. This was tested using the cross chromatin immunoprecipitation technique, coupled with the use of genomic sequencing.…

Additional methods of diagnosing prostate cancer include, biopsy, cystoscopy, and transrectal ultrasonography. Because there are rarely symptoms associated with early prostate cancer, most people who develop this disease will be diagnosed through a routine screening, or it may be discovered as they are being tested for a different illness.…

Pancreatic cancer is prominent in adults over the age of 60. Cancer research centers, and doctors alike, have researched pancreatic cancer for more than 40 years and it still has the lowest survival rate of all other cancers (Higuera, et al., 2016). My goal is to spread the awareness and inform adults about the symptoms in hopes it will help doctors diagnose it sooner and in turn, help beat the odds for survival.…

There are other tests that are key to identifying Osteosarcoma such as; “an MRI of the entire bone where the primary tumor is located, a chest x-ray and CT scan of the chest to detect lung metastases, a bone scan of the body to rule out distant spread of the disease, and a biopsy of the tumor” (Ryan, S., & Sorens, M. (2012, October). There are 2 types of biopsies; a needle aspiration or a surgical biopsy, with location playing a key part in deciding which procedure to perform. By performing the biopsy doctors will also be able to tell how malignant the tumor is, and the stage of the…
