Multiple Intelligences: The Theories Of Howard Gardner

I had never heard of the theory of multiple intelligences and I had no previous knowledge about Howard Gardner. It was really interesting to learn about him, his life and his theory. I think there is many good points in the theory of multiple intelligences, and I think it was important for me to learn about this theory because it has influenced education and thinking in the United States. Gardner’s theory suggests that the traditional view of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is inadequate. In his theory he proposes that there are many different intelligences that contribute to a broader range of human potential in children and adults. The first is linguistic intelligence which involves the understanding of spoken and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the use language. The next type of intelligence is logical-mathematical intelligence and it consists of the ability to analyze problems, perform mathematical operations, and the use of the scientific method to solve problems. Of course, these two intelligences are the most important in the school system, but if these intelligences were not as strong for someone, they would definitely struggle in school. The next intelligences involve the arts. Musical intelligence involves skill in performing, composing, and the understanding of musical patterns. It also includes the ability to recognize and compose musical pitches, tones, and rhythms. Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence involves using body to solve problems. It is the ability to use mental abilities to coordinate bodily movements. Spatial intelligence involves recognizing and using the patterns of wide space and more confined areas. I do not really understand this intelligence. I am thinking that it would benefit engineers and construction workers, but I am not sure. Interpersonal intelligence concerns with the ability to understand other people and their intentions and motivations. The idea that there can be seven ways to teach, instead of one, is a great way to make children better-rounded. This fact surprised me, but a number of schools in North America have looked to structure their curriculum according to the multiple intelligences. I think that doing this would help children who learn in different ways. Not everyone is a sit at a desk and read to understand type of learner. Personally, I would consider myself a very boring type of learner, and the “traditional” type of learner. I learn best from reading a book, watching videos, and taking notes. I know many students are unable to learn that way, and they learn better from watching demonstrations or doing activities. I remember when I had to take geography and we had to memorize all the countries in Europe. My teacher played a song that said all the names and a way to remember the country, and many students in my class loved it and it helped them memorize the country. Personally, it did not help me at all, and I would rather just study a map to learn the countries. Having multiple ways to learn is definitely beneficial to all
