Multilingual speakers can communicate with others in different languages. "Burning Each of the Candle: Negotiating Dual Identities in Second Language Writing" by Soo Hyon Kim and "Negotiation of Identities in Multilingual Setting: Korean 1.5 Generation in Email Writing" by Kang express multilingual speakers’ identities. Kim feels confused because she can use two kinds of languages, and different languages makes her has many identities. Conflicts of different identities cause her complications. Compare with Kim, Kang does not care about the conflicts of identities, she pays attention to the choice of languages. She feels uncertain about which type of language to use in living and working. Therefore, I would like to talk about Kang finally thinks what her identities are. Although Kim …show more content…
The main difference is that Kang can use English more proficiently, because she is a Korean immigrant who came to America early. This difference makes their identities become different. Kim worked hard on learning English as an international student of America, so she argues that she has the student’s identity (Kim, 2010). And laborious study makes her master English successfully, that is why she argues that she has an identity of teacher and L2 scholar (Kim, 2010). For example, she studied English assiduously as a non-native speaker and then mastered American rhetorical patterns. As a multilingual speaker, identities of the instructor and L2 scholar lead her to learn about the international students’ difficulties and problems in detail. Kim has realized her dual identities. Compare with Kim, Kang does not care about whether her identity is a teacher, a student or a writer. She pays more attention to which type of languages she should use in email writing. She is a Korean immigrant of American who is also a Chinese Ph.D. (Kang, 2010). She can communicate through three languages, but her troubles also come from this.
