Multigenerational Learning Style

The Generational Xers who are in the classroom may not benefit from the same learning style as the Millennials. Students often times can learn the most when they discuss and write about their clinical experiences and other nursing related experiences. The reflective writing method gives the student a mentation of the fact that the situation or experience that they are describing is a real world happening, and helps the student to have an understanding of the concept (Kennison, 2012). Three learning theories that will be addressed in this discussion are as follows, self-directed and optimized, transformative, and critical reflection. Chen (2014) investigates “adult learners are self-directed and their learning is optimized when their experience is recognized and utilized in the learning process” (p. 407). Adult students are not 'clear slates' and their background turns into the medium through which substance is found out and in which to rethink new objectives to achieve (Chen, 2014). Self-directed is appropriate for an adult due to the connection that is made with their life experiences, the adult is able to plan and implement learning based upon their desire and initiation to learn. Self-directed is inappropriate for children because children rely upon the teacher as the caretaker to their education and implementation of it.…

Simulation and Debriefing in Nursing Education Nursing education is a fast paced and ever changing field in which its educators must utilize teaching strategies that continually encourage active learning of their students. Simulation is a teaching strategy that is becoming commonplace in nursing curricula. By utilizing simulation, educators are able to duplicate most critical aspects of a clinical scenario so that it may be readily understood when students experience it in clinical practice (Cant & Cooper, 2010). This teaching strategy provides a safe and active learning environment for students to utilize their affective, cognitive and psychomotor skills in combination with the development of critical thinking, clinical decision-making…

Final Level/Program Reflection I began the nursing program with very minimal nursing knowledge. Throughout the curriculum, I learned the fundamental skills of being a nurse, but my learning went further than skills. The greatest accomplishment I will take away from this program is an improved understanding of what nursing is: facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering, protection and promotion of health, and advocacy for patients, families, and communities. This idea has been discussed numerous times throughout the curriculum, and as I approach graduation, I finally appreciate the meaning of "what is nursing.…

Reflective Journal Clinicals has become a definite insight into myself and the emotions, that sometimes in life, I have become numb to. Dealing with those around me and visualizing them as possibly some of my own family members, can cause an overflow of emotions that for a nurse could be a good or bad thing for many. Being overly emotional can result in not giving adequate care for the patient because my emotions may interfere with other disciplinaries decisions of care on the patient. On the other hand, being numb to it all can also decrease the level of care a nurse can give because the nurse may forget that a patient is still a human being and not just…

This is a reflective practice paper that discusses that discusses the clinical experience, knowledge gain during this rotation and the student nurse practitioner’s perspective of knowledge and experience gap in comparison to her preceptors. Reflecting on clinical experience is important in that it allows the student practitioner to be self-aware and analyze his or her critical thinking based on patient encounter thus allowing them an opportunity for learning from their discovery (Wilding, 2008). To appreciate the improvement and expansion of my clinical experience and learning curve, one must look back on my first clinical rotation. I commit to create a caring atmosphere in the clinical setting for my students to facilitate the mutual respect, trust and reciprocal learning. I understand true learning can only take place when the student has the personal desire to learn and not from a personal desire to please the educator. In this reciprocal environment, I serve as a learning facilitator, guiding students towards understanding through discussion, activities and shared experiences.…
