A problem that is still occurring now is the unfair distribution of power towards men and women. Foyne Mahaffey explained that the acts of sexual harassment on girls were not at all extraordinary. “When sexual harassment is treated casually as in ‘boys will be boys,’ both girls and boys get a dangerous, damaging message: ‘girls are not worthy of respect and that appropriate behavior for boys includes exerting power over girls’” (Mahaffey, Foyne, 39). The unfairness of the situation when a girl or boy is harassed is being taken as a joke. When a girl is to be harassed in school, the student will be sent home or get yelled at. The girls are powerless because they fear the results or the after effects. Foyne Mahaffey questioned some girls on the sexual harassment happening around them and they said, “We can’t do anything, probably no one will listen to us. I told my mom and she says I just have to put up with it. We don’t want to get in trouble” (Mahaffey, Foyne, 18). The fact that even now things like gender roles are an obstacle to a diverse environment shows the lack of acknowledgement on the issue of multiculturalism. The teachings within a school does not inform their students about things such as being racist and sexist. These students are taught the basic format given to them, they are taught like they are the majority. But as a result of that, the growth of multiculturalism within schools are the same. The act of exposing these students to things such as equality in gender roles and in races, will take time but it will work.
