In this article the author suggests that the increasing number of diverse populations in the United States, it is important to remember that the ways in which different cultures view physical activity may play a part in the marginalization of physical education. Diversity is defined as differences in groups of people and individuals based on ethnicity, race, language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, exceptionalities, and religion. All of the aspects of diversity are a "culture" in and of itself. In one study of African American and American Indian women, the term "leisure" was interpreted as meaning "lazy" (Tudor-Locke et al., 2003).
