The multicultural issues in this case are numerous. The APA ethical code (3.01) sites that counselors should not engage in discrimination in work activities (APA, 2017).
Although it is thought that white individuals will become more tolerant of other cultures when they become aware of their own privilege, this is not seen in individuals that identify strongly with their white culture (Croll, 2007). Therefore the counselor should not make an effort to change the client’s position. Although she is not in agreement with the client’s position, it should be respected as any other cultural identity as described by the APA.
