I will try to prevent very little if any prejudice and discrimination. In order to achieve this type of environment I must be culturally competent. To be culturally competent means you have to take the time and researches the different cultures, genders, and disabilities in your classroom or school. This research can be done from internet, students, parents, observation, or even simply asking questions. The word wall had the names and definitions of vocabulary words relevant to their material. On the excellence board was high quality papers that were submitted by students.
The desks in her classroom was set up in groups of four where the students were facing each other. Ms. McGowan second period class consists of 27 students 15 African Americans (9 girls and 6 boys) 9 Hispanic (6 girls and 3 boys) and 3 Caucasian (2 girls and 1 boy). Her third period class has 29 students 15 African Americans (8 girls and 7 boys) 10 Hispanic (7 girls and 3 boys) and 4 Caucasian (2 girls and 2 boys). When Ms. McGown and I were reviewing with the class, I noticed she was fair with all her students. She gave everyone extended time on the test.
For the Hispanic students a para professional came in the room and read the test in Spanish.
Once we picked up all the students test Ms. McGown allowed me to help her grade the test and view the data. After reviewing the data from the test she let me sit down with her to complete the next lesson plan. Some material from the previous lesson had to be retaught. So we regrouped the students not by ability but they were grouped by how effectively they worked together.
