Multicultural Education Chapter 7 Analysis

This week I found both chapter 7 & chapter 8 to hold great ideas and helpful insights into becoming multicultural educators. Specifically, after reading chapter 8 I thought it would be a great benefit to a multicultural educator to be submersed in a foreign country for a short period of time before they start teaching. I think even if a future educator spent a week in a foreign country, ideally where they do not look like or speak the same language as the ethnic majority, it would greatly benefit them and their future students. As Chia-lin Huang shared in chapter 8, during her time in the United States she began to understand what the students she was instructing in Taiwan must have felt. This gave her an understanding of their feelings of inadequacy, discomfort, frustration amongst other insights. …show more content…
This understanding would ideally transfer to recognizing when their students are faced with the same feelings as well as the need for the student to be able to share some of their culture with the class. I really think this is where allowing our students to help decorate our classroom with pieces of their work will help them to feel more comfortable and represented in our classrooms. I also think this opens up the opportunity for us to build relationships with our students and their families by providing opportunities for them to share about themselves with the class. Whether we do this through a class party where each family brings their favorite food or dessert to share or once a month we celebrate a couple of our students and allow them to bring something into

    When reading ”Mobilizing culture, language, and educational practices, Fulfilling the promises of Mendez and Brown” by Moll, L (2010) it goes on to explain the landmark brown v. board of education (1954) involving the Mexican and Mexican American students who lived in California.
