Multicultural And Anti-Bias

a. I have been very interested in this topic of multicultural and anti-bias since taking Mary Moeller’s, Human Relations class last fall. One of the main focuses and topics of the class was on diversity. I was able to learn things about myself as well as observe many situations that include these topics. I was drawn to these articles to see what other insights I could learn about the topic of multicultural and anti-bias. While I was reading, I found similar ideas that I had previous learned. I also concluded, as I did last semester, that it seems as if this topic is becoming such an important issue that needs to be discussed with children. Also while reading, I noticed that so much of this information is true, but we like to put these topics on the back burner of our …show more content…
One concept I learned from these articles were the four goals of anti-bias education. (Side note, he first two were difficult to read-being scanned in). These four goals are like gears and the first one moves the second and second moves the third and the third moves the fourth. After reading about each goal, I can see how each goal truly does effect the next. I also learned about the tools that are used to support a multicultural

Under the Influence: Discrimination Since the start of the 21st century, racial diversity has increased and the nation’s minority population has grown substantially. Minorities today are the majority in many parts of the country. Studies predict that if current rates of the national population continue to trend the way it has for the past 20 year, then by 2035, minorities will outnumber non-Hispanic caucasians. There are many benefits and advantages of diversity, however, there are also challenges and barriers. It is important to note that the very communities that are growing are also the ones that are experiencing significant obstacles, disparities and discrimination.…

This article focused on how different ethnic backgrounds saw their position in society and how their culture was either advantageous to their success or the reason they stayed stagnant in life. The parallels in his arguments spoke volumes to my situation and the struggle to let my culture be my strength and not my weakness. I especially was impressed with how he explained the schooling of minority individuals and the barriers that must be overcome to be successful. As a child, I never realized how much harder my Hispanic friends who immigrated from their home countries had to work, but it is an inspiration looking back on it now. Three questions that I believe would be key to a discussion would be 1)…

It is the responsibility of Educators to teach children about diversity to prevent discrimination, cause till now they have been introduced to the culture, values and traditions of their own family. - In small groups I would make conversations with children about diversity and encourage children to have their say and opinions, be open to discussions about the way they feel, share within the group, things they have seen, heard or experienced. - Read books to the children about being respectful of each other’s differences and arrange small group activities on what they have learnt and understood from the book. - Organise excursions where children will be able explore and be introduced to different cultures and experience this for themselves.…

The source is written by many different authors and it is mainly edited by the 4 authors mentioned above. These authors are one of the best scholars that tackle the controversial ideas of diversity, and Canadian policies. It respectfully challenges the saint idea that multiculturalism is great for Canada, however it does not claim Multiculturalism is actually bad. It continually demonstrates the underlying capability, the conventional restraints and the miniscule disorders of the policies and blinding discourse of multiculturalism.…

The promotion of cultural diversity and individual difference can increase students’ self-concepts whilst developing respect and understanding for all people. By placing a value and acknowledging mutual respect for all individuals, avoidance of racial stereotyping begins, it also enables racist comments and misconceptions to be replaced with factual information (Craven, 2011). By providing educators with greater understandings based on fact and truth empowers…

A major theme in this section is the American struggle with racism. The chapter begins with the historic achievement of Barack Obama and ends with the differing circumstances/perceptions of the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his son Congressman Jesse Jackson III. Race is the classification of humans. While science has demonstrated that the concept of "race" is an illusion, it is still a very powerful illusion that shapes the way that humans act and think. "This is our first and most fundamental American Argument: Who, in our constitutional scheme, is a 'person'?"…

Australia is classed as a multicultural society consisting of people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. After World War Two there was an influx of Greek and Italian people settling in Australia. The end of the Vietnam War saw an increase in the population by displaced Vietnamese people. In recent times, displaced persons arriving and settling in Australia are from Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and African nations including Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan. Each of these population groups brings their own cultural and linguistic attributes to Australia.…

After reading these three chapters I found a quote on page 41 that I think really sums up the idea of an anti bias education. It says, “Listen carefully and with an open heart.” Young children are always trying to make sense of the word and the idea’s they create in their heads are not necessarily signs of prejudice. It’s important for us to remember that children can’t always communicate what they think or how they feel. So as teachers we need to listen and figure out what they want to know.…

Through all of our readings and discussions from this class, we have studied many issues related to diversity. Diversity plays a major role in our culture today; however, discrimination based on race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and gender has been apart of America’s history since the beginning. This class taught me a lot about discrimination because of diversity, and I want to focus on specifically on racial issues. In this essay, I will review several excerpts from this class concerning issues that have arisen from racial discrimination, both from America’s history and present. The first excerpt we read regarding racial issues discussed immigration to America in the late 1800’s.…

Racism is the belief that belonging to a particular race means a person has inherent characteristics that one deemed either superior or inferior. Based on racist belief, prejudice and discrimination are still alive today, though important figures as Martin L. King Jr. lead the movements to end this and enact anti-segregation laws. These ideas are being transmitted to younger generations despite the progress that has been made. The minorities and people who are victimized by this injustice find it often difficult to focus on the task at hand and the goals they set out for. When victimized, people often respond in two ways: acting out in a violent manner, or fighting against others.…

Over the past decade, discrimination has become a major epidemic in today’s society. Socialization has been recognized as a key issue in creating stereotypes and bias opinions on certain groups. Society tends to steer towards the norms, values, behavior, and social skills of those around them in their community, even if they are discriminatory. Gender and race discrimination in crime have become more and more problematic over the past few years. In current events, it is shown women serve less jail time than men or law enforcement officer’s not following the appropriate protocols when dealing with African Americans.…

I never thought of racism and prejudice as a reaction to strangers coming into contact with each other but that makes sense. People often say, “I’m not racist, I have black friends.” That tells me that they don’t realize that racism is not necessarily about how you treat the people you call friend but more about the people you don’t know at all. Psychologically, there are varying levels of prejudice.…

The second reaction paper I decided to write about is racial and ethnic inequality in America. Around the world, America is known as the melting pot of different cultures. When people think about America, people think that everyone has freedom and equality. Yet most people do not think about that America has a strong history of racial and ethnic inequality. In America, people do not like minorities coming in large numbers therefore they are often mistreated.…
