• Kotter’s framework of leading change sets forth 8 stages that lead to successful change. After listening and watching the video on Xerox’s turn-around, it was evident that Mulcahy utilized the following of Kotter’s framework: o Establishing a sense of urgency: As Mulcahy mentioned in the video, Xerox was going through a crisis which she referred to as “early adopters of corporate crisis.” Because of this urgency, Mulcahy was able to dissect the overall problem to bits and pieces and issues related to each department. She in fact stated that she perhaps should be referred to as the Chief Communicator Officer. She has the skill of listening to employees which, I believe, resulted in trustworthy relationship. Hence, after creating this rapport with all levels of employees, she was able to effectively communicate the strategies she has to reach the company vision. o Empower others to act on the vision: As Mulcahy was describing, she had inspired them so much that they were already looking past the crisis and planning for Xerox’s future. They were not interested in what is going on, but rather what they can do for the future of the company. This tells me that Mulcahy’s ability to empower others was a significant factor to get buy-in from the staff.
2 How would you describe Mulcahy according to her leadership style and practices? Can her success be attributed to her leadership style?
• I absolutely believe a change at Xerox was possible only because of Mulcahy’s leadership style. Her leadership style represents the one of a Transformational Leader. In this theory, leaders address followers’ higher sense of purpose. I have not gone through major change management at my workplace, but Mulcahy turnaround success resonates with what we have learned in class and the theories we are applying to our clients. Mulcahy also applied many of Kotter’s eight factors for success which we have covered in the class. Many of these steps are relatively easy to implement which some of them we are using for our Team Organizational Analysis Project. I truly find her actions admirable and Mulcahy is a person that many should be inspired. In fact, Mulcahy has been widely recognized for her transformational leadership style and also successfully trained her own replacement to be as successful
