Mulan’s Journey Through Adversity
Imagine your father was drafted into the military, having to fight a war. Knowing that he would not survive, how would you handle the situation? Would you take action or just wait and see how it all plays out? In the 1998 Disney movie, Mulan, this is exactly the problem she has to face. The story takes places in China where a war is about to take place. Mulan’s father is called up into the military to fight against the Huns. Knowing he would not survive, Mulan disguises herself as a man and tries to get in, even though she knows it is illegal for a women to join. Mulan presents almost all of Kohlberg’s stages of moral development, except for level 1. The movie implies that women can do anything that men can

If one is female, she is expected to be graceful and refined, and bring honor by marrying a man. If one is male, he is expected to bring honor by being brave and skilled in fighting. The movie is trying to break societies image of what a young girl should act and be. At the beginning of the film movie Mulan is a perfect young woman who is abiding by the rules of society and bringing her family great joy. This represents Level 2, conventional morality. At this point in the film she specifically shows stage 3 and 4 because she following the rules to not be seen as a failure and dishonor her family. throughout the movie Mulan learns that there are different methods to be an honorable …show more content…
I believe this because even though she dishonored the Chinese army and let everyone down including her family, she was still determined to go on after breaking multiple laws and the rules of chinese culture. Near the end of the movie when Mulan defeats the Huns and the empire of China is safe, people still fail to recognize her great feat just because she is a girl. After Mulan had defeated the Huns the Emperor’s consultant Chi Fu, said, ” This is a woman. She will never be worth anything.” This goes to show that even if a woman saved a nation from disaster, she would still be judged and her accomplishments would be looked at differently because she was a
