Every religion has artwork that depicts the works of their respective gods or their god’s disciples. Christianity has many pieces of art that show the life of Christ and his works as well as his disciples. Muslims have pieces that depict the life of Muhammad, who was the main disciple of their god Allah. Jewish people have works that show the greatness of heaven and of God. The Good Shepherd and The Ascent of the Prophet Muhammad on his Steed Buraq, Guided by Jibra’il and Escorted by Angel, are good illustrations of the tributes that people of different faiths pay to what they believe in. Unlike in the painting of Muhammad, Jesus is the only object that is clothed in bright colors. He is placed in front of a background of neutral colors in order to create contrast and further establish him as the centerpiece of the artwork. Instead of flames adorning the head of the prophet, Jesus humbly wears a halo that shows his divinity. In this painting, Jesus is surrounded by animals, which is completely different from the angels that surrounded Muhammad in his ascension. Jesus is giving food to the animals and shows the kind of giving prophet that he was, unlike Muhammad who was being adorned in gifts by the angels. Jesus was divine in a way that he gave back to the world rather than took from the world. The sheep will follow the shepherd that feeds it. Jesus did that with his disciples and his people. That is what this mosaic is depicting, the sheep followed Jesus and trusted him and he feeds them in return.
