Muhammad Ali The Greatest Soldier

Decent Essays
The most inspiring person I have read about this quarter is Muhammad Ali because even dealing with racism and judgement, he still became the greatest boxer. In paragraph 2 it says “When I proclaimed that I was the “Greatest of All Time” , I believed in myself. And I still do.” It in the text it also states Nothing in life has defeated me. I am the “Greatest.” This I believe.” This means that even through hardships he still believed in himself and nothing in life will ever stop him from becoming the greatest in the world.

Though Muhammad Ali was not one to skirt with the concept of breaking the law and resorting to aggressive means to ensure his survival outside of the ring, but he was known to stir controversy when his opinions, often strong, were to clash with the established norms and issues of the time. One of the most notable examples was his eventual arrest and conviction upon refusing to serve in the armed forces during the Vietnam War. An institution that was one of the primary elements of the counter-culture of the 60s was the act of drafting soldiers to fight in the Vietnam War, a conflict that was waged with the objective of stopping the then-threat of communism throughout South East Asia. On the 28th of April 1967, Muhammad Ali, the reigning heavyweight champion of the world, in an act of defiance towards the American government, refused induction into the United States military on the grounds that he was a conscientious objector. Ali’s conscience reason was that it would go against the teachings of his religion Islam. He believed he should be exempt from participation in the Vietnam War because it went against his religion to do so. Islam is a religion of peace however it is permitted in self-defence in defence of Islam. Public opinion on whether Ali was legitimately against the war or just trying to dodge the draft was split.…

This quote inspires me to endure any hardships I experience for two reasons: it reminds me that there could be more difficult events I could face, and that my reward for enduring it will be a meaningful life experience. Because everyone experiences hardships in life, I can look at this quote and be reassured that I am not the only one with a certain problem, but I am also convinced that many people live through more severe events and therefore I can definitely withstand whatever life may give me. When I look at this quote, I recall all my past troubles and, more importantly, what I learned from those. The quote is similar in message to the “hang in there!”…

After watching the movie Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight, many of the events/situation that occurred between the Supreme Court Justices and law clerks surprised me. First, I was fascinated by Justice Harlan’s law clerk, Kevin Connolly’s tenacity and idealistic attitude during the process of rejecting and accepting the case, Clay v. the United States. For instance, Connolly’s bravery was demonstrated when he tried to dismiss his responsibility to write the brief directed by Justice Harlan due to his political ideology.…

focused on how white Americans talk about Ali as this icon that transcended race, but Smith makes the point that this distorts the reality of Ali’s life and what he meant to people around the world as well as Americans. He redefined his identity calling for racial unity he declared, “I’m not an American, I’m a black man (Smith, 2017).” Between the 1960-1970 various publications and documentaries portrayed Ali as not a symbol of peace, tolerance, and unity. Most of the time they just point out how Ali shamelessly denigrated Joe Frazier. Ali’s refusal to get drafted in Vietnam made him a unifying force among African Americans and inspired support from nationalists and integrationists.…

“Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou, this excerpt chronicles how a boxer named Joe Louis captivated the world by being one of the first black boxer to be heavyweight champion of the world. In the late 1930 when segregation and inequality for African Americans was so prominent, something like that captivated the world and boosted the spirits of African Americans who were being depressed and were treated horribly by whites. This story lets you see inside a store of African Americans who are listening to the radio of the championship between Joe and a white challenger. During this fight Angelou connects the fight to the pride of all African Americans and how every African American shared the same pride in him and were counting on him to solidify to the white people that they are strong and are not sub- humans. She uses paragraph 16 and 17 to get the point across to readers that it was a huge deal for African Americans that he won because they felt they would end up staying at second class citizens and go back to being slaves if he lost which at the time could have been completely probable.…
