About 107,000 people die each year from asbestos related diseases. Exposure to asbestos causes cancer of the lung, larynx, and ovaries, also MESOTHELIOMA and asbestosis. Opportunities for exposure are, filing, grinding or sanding brakes, or cleaning up work areas(Morris). Jim Morris found interesting cases of asbestos and how Ford new that exposure is harmful. Muckraking does still exist by Jim Morris's article, “Ford Spent $40 Million to Reshape Asbestos Science.”

Why couldn't they have banned these brakes sooner Ford already new about asbestos in brakes, can cause mesothelioma. Ford said they had been putting caution labels on packages of asbestos-containing brakes and clutches in 1980. Many of these Mesothelioma victims who sued Ford say that they never saw these alleged labels(Morris). There are many ways asbestos fibers can get into a human body. When a mechanic opens a brake package, it would be filled with fine dust from the lining that is decaying. The easiest and most common way to clean out the asbestos fibers were to use compressed air, a technique that generates grayish clouds that are filled with fibers of asbestos that can trigger diseases years later if that worker is not properly protected. That may be just wearing a mask of a special suit. Many of these people were not protected from these fibers in the clouds. Many scientists from The World Health Organization have found that there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos to produce Mesothelioma(Morris). Someone with very low exposure should be worried. In order for Ford to try to defend their case, they have spent nearly $40 million dollars to find articles and have scientist try to prove there point that exposure to asbestos doesn't increase the risk of mesothelioma developing. That is a lot of money and effort that is spent on a
