Muckraking In The Progressive Era

The Progressive Era was a time of a lot of change in our government, sociality, and rights. People called Muckrakers solved problems that people didn´t realize that were happening. Muckraking is the action of searching out and publicizing scandalous information about famous people in an underhanded way. Muckraking journalism had a positive effect on the Progressive Era in the early 20th, but today it stills has the same effect. Some examples of muckrakers of today and in that time are Nellie Bly, Jacob Riis, Upton Sinclair, Ida B. Wells, and Samuel Hopkins Adams. Every person listed above helped or solved a problem that people saw as a negative effect in the present time or the Progressive Era.

Jacob Riis took a look at the living conditions of the urban poor. He saw broken windows, houses, and roof caved in so it didn't protect immigrants against the weather. He saw that kids were sleeping on the cold ground next to heaters to keep warm because they didn't have to a place to sleep. These kids didn't have much clothes on maybe a shirt and shorts, so they couldn´t keep warm. In these house here were a lot of people sleeping in one small area. The houses were very dirty, with mold and other things on the walls. People had to buy a space to sleep there for the night, and if one person got sick everyone would get sick. He saw kids sitting in the wastewater that is on the streets, near dead or rotten things. In one of the pictures he took, there was a bunch of kids playing in the street, where a rotten horse lays dead about 3 feet away from them. Because of his work, ¨It inspires Roosevelt to close the worst of the lodging houses and spurred city officials to reform and enforce the city’s housing
