Have you ever played a joke on you friends? Or tried to prank them into believing something that wasn’t necessarily true? Well in William Shakespeare's, Much Ado About Nothing, these things happen all the time. In this story, there are numerous events where deception play a key role in the plot and moves the story into different directions. Some of the deception is harmless and other times it is very malicious. Shakespeare uses themes to teach a lesson to the reader that being honest to yourself and others is always the best thing to do. He makes two major themes in this play all revolving around deception. This means that you can use deception to get something you want. There are many scenes in this play where someone or a group of people use deception to achieve a desired goal. In Act 2 Scene 3, The Prince says, “What was it you told me of today, that your niece Beatrice was in love with Signor Benedick”(2.3, 95-97). Don Pedro, Claudio, and Leonato all tricked Benedick into believing that Beatrice was in love with him so that he would realize his feelings for her. This was a fairly harmless trick yet it could have ended badly if she didn’t actually love him. This group used deception in order to achieve their goal, which was too see Benedick marry Beatrice. In Act 3 Scene 1, Hero says to Ursula, “ My talk to thee must be how Benedick is sick in love with Beatrice”(3.1, 22-23). Hero and Ursula are trying to trick Beatrice into realizing her feelings towards Benedick. Claudio, Don Pedro, and Leanato were working with Hero and Ursula to deceive the two to of them for their wants, which was to see those two get married. They used deception to get the faithful bachelor to marry and the sworn single lady to put on a ring. In Act 3 Scene 2, Don John says, “... she has been too long a-talking of, the lady us disloyal”(3.2, 95-97). Don John uses deception to trick Claudio and Don Pedro into believing Hero is cheating. He used deception to highlight two of the play’s main themes, which is that deception is a means to an end and that self deception is the one of the worst kinds of deception. He knew how to use deception to move the plot into different directions and just to make the story more interesting. Don John was used by Shakespeare to really highlight what a villain looks like and also show that not all villains will act like your enemy, until it’s too late. I believe Shakespeare wanted to teach the public that deception for bad purposes will only get you in trouble, and he succeeded. He has proved in this play that even the brightest of us can be deceived and that you must always be mindful of your surroundings and to always be questioning what someone’s intentions are because your closest ally might just be your worst
