Much Ado About Nothing Comedy

Much Ado about Nothing, I believe one of the best comedies because of the combination of full-bodied humor and the dealings with more serious matters like honor, shame, and love. The comedy starts with the title utilizing a play on words, the comedic elements are strong with saucy interactions between characters and the ever so memorable “Dogberryism” to have a hearty belly laugh. However, it has its moments that become very real and very honest. It has the ability to make an audience or reader feel agitated because of a strong sense of anger, hatred and despair in the main characters. Furthermore, it is the thin line between comedy and tragedy that really attracts the attention of the audience and it gets them involved in the narrative as …show more content…
Leonato is now the head honcho of the publishing company, regardless of title he is top dog unlike that where Don Pedro was the ruling Prince over Messina at the time. Don Pedro has also changed his position in the world from Prince of Aragon to a hot-shot publishing agent working for Leonato at his company. Don John will be changed from the brother of Don Pedro to his shadowy office rival. Since Don John is the villain of the play and is sullen and rather melancholy I thought what would be appropriate to have an office rivalry, as Don John schemes to ruin Don Pedro who is held in such high regard than compared to him. His resentment of Don Pedro and his later actions would almost put him in the same boat as Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. Maintaining the love story of Claudio and Hero is important because of the young nature of it contrasts the more seasoned love between Beatrice and Benedick. However, instead of a love at first sight between the two of them, I would change it so Hero is still the daughter of Leonato, but Claudio has a crush on her since he was hired by Leonato and just has not said anything to her. All of this will be revealed to the audience in a similar conversation that Claudio and Benedick had in Act 1 Scene 1. Claudio will gush about Hero to Benedick, and showing that modesty is important to him, and she has that along with her beauty. In this conversation Benedick will still share his opinion of Hero to Claudio, as well as express his distaste for marriage as Claudio says he’d brake his vow of no marriage just for Hero. Enter Don Pedro into the conversation around the water cooler. Claudio will have his conversation with Don Pedro where he gets his help in wooing Hero, but only after Benedick openly tells Don Pedro at the water cooler. It is because Don Pedro is just a good guy and a hot-shot around the office he decides to help Claudio. I would show him proposing a

Throughout the play, Don John is very candid about his yearning to ruin Claudio. In fact, while talking to Borachio about his plan to ruin Claudio’s marriage, Don John bluntly asserts, “If I can cross him any way, I bless myself every way” (I.iii.65-66). Shakespeare makes Don John’s intentions transparent in order to emphasize the pure wickedness of Don John’s desires to ruin Claudio’s life– he will go to any measure to achieve his goals, regardless of the consequences. Don John also neglects the possible effects on other people's reputations through his acts of deception. He assures Claudio that Hero is unfaithful, “I came hither to tell you;... she has been too long a-talking of, the lady is disloyal” (III.ii.95-97).…

The simple actions of cheering up a sulking friend caused the entire disaster that is the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. Romeo comes home sulking about Rosaline, and Benvolio insists on going to the Capulet’s party to “examine other beauties” (I,i,1,224) and compare them to Rosaline. Although going to the party achieved the goal of making Romeo forget about Rosaline, it brought about a new love: Juliet. To illustrate this in a more modern fashion, it can be said that Benvolio is in the position of the friend with no love or relationship experience, but is always the one who is turned…

On the other hand, Benedick has nothing good to say about getting married, or women for that matter. Benedick has a very negative outlook on marriage, he thinks it is pointless and that he will never find a faithful woman. Not only do they differ in that way, but also Claudio is very shy and quiet, whilst Benedick is very flamboyant and witty. One of the concepts Shakespeare explores in Much Ado About Nothing is that of the different natures of relationships. Throughout the play, Shakespeare sets up two distinct pairs of lovers, both exemplifying a different model of relationship. Shakespeare contrasts two ideals of relationships, one of which being a relationship of immediacy based on necessity and a need to fulfill social norms, and the other being a relationship that is based on genuine feelings of love that are cultivated slowly and thoughtfully over time. The conversation between Anthony, Leonato, Beatrice, and Hero in Act Two Scene One, regarding how Hero should respond to her impending proposal, contributes to this exploration of differing types of love by juxtaposing the nature of relationship that Anthony, Leonato, and Hero subscribe to with the differing ideal of relationship that Beatrice favors.…
