Benedick and Beatrice have many differences and similarities. Their relationship is very rocky at the beginning of Much Ado About Nothing, whether is was their quick-witted comment or stubborn personality, they seemed like enemies. All of Benedick and Beatrice’s traits make them unique characters, although there are similarities between them. Deep down in this bizarre, confusing relationship there are hidden feelings, they flirt. The relationship between Benedick and Beatrice is very amusing in both similar and different ways. One main and obvious reason is they are both witty. They say rude things about each other, though that seems to be the only way they can express feelings. Benedick has said Beatrice is beautiful, but he used a seemingly rude comment to hide it. They are also both very stubborn. For one, they refuse to admit their anything until the other person does, second, they wait for someone else to say something because they refuse to do it themselves. Lastly, each of them do not want to marry and for the same reasons. They both believe if they were to marry, their spouse would cheat on them, Benedick is less subtle about it, he speaks badly about women and says they will most likely cheat on him. Beatrice, however, does not speak out about it often. She talks about her “perfect man,” but says a man being like that would be impossible to find.
Much Ado About Nothing was a play about love and the many ways relationships can come to be. Benedick and Beatrice had a very unique and beautiful relationship. From the start, they were rivals, but soon, all of that rivalry would lead to a relationship blossoming.
