In the play Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare, two unlikely candidates supposedly fall in love; Beatrice and Benedick. Beatrice and Benedick had a history of disdain for one another, before they “fell in love”. The only reason they each decide to return the other's love after being deceived into thinking that the other is in love with them. Beatrice is then very quick to use Benedicks supposed love for her to her advantage. Beatrice and Benedick are not truly in love because if they were, they would not have insulted each other so much, needed deceit to make it come to fruition, and then Beatrice would not have taken advantage of Benedick.

Beatrice especially always has uncivil words to throw Benedick's way, and at times it seems Benedick can't even keep up with her wicked words. “I would my horse had the speed of your tongue, and so good continued, but keep your way, i’ God's name, I have done” (I.I.139-141). The insults that Beatrice is throwing Benedicks way are so vicious that he has to walk away when he runs out of witty comments to throw back. Those kinds of vicious insults are not the type that someone who is in love with a person would say to their face. The only reason that the vicious insults stop, is because of a fraudulent scheme that is made to get Beatrice and Benedick to fall in
