Mt. Hall Elementary Classroom Observation

One of the classrooms that I observed was a fifth grade class at Mt. Hall Elementary school. The class is comprised of 21 students who are spread out between six tables, with three to four students per table. When you first walk into the classroom you are greeted by a wall of self-portraits of the students. One wall is dedicated to math. Posters about math rules and concepts along with student created math concept posters align the wall. Another wall is dedicated to language arts. Grammar and writing rules along with student created stories align this wall. On the back wall, state content standards are laminated and colorfully displayed. On the front wall, the weekly and daily agenda are clearly displayed and written in a student friendly way. …show more content…
The teacher has a saying on her class procedures poster, “when the music is off, you listen and when the music is on, you can talk.” The music is her launch button, so when she activates it the students know they must get to work. This also indicates that they can collaborate. I found this strategy highly effective. Students would actively work on their assignment or projects while the music played lightly in the background. To make sure certain groups stayed on task, the teacher would wander around the room helping students or using proximity and comments such as “is this a productive use of your time?” When it was about time to stop, she would increase the volume for about ten seconds. This was the auditory cue for the students, and when the music was turned off, the kids were silent and focused on her. During my time in this classroom I did not observe any behavior problems that required individual classroom behavior …show more content…
As prior military, I have a strong focus on consistent procedures. My students have a daily routine that they can count on. I have established an amount of time for each aspect of my lesson: presentation of new information, guided practice, and independent practice. I use timers to maintain the schedule, and I have timer setters and monitors as student responsibilities. Students know to transition when they hear the timer. I have multiple desk arrangements which I change throughout the day. We train at the beginning of the year to quickly re arrange the desks into the five patterns that I have devised. I train this procedure as a competitive game among the students to increase speed and efficiency. Now when I call out a desk arrangement like rows, three pod, circle, or four square the students can transition in under thirty seconds. Our school district has certain classroom management procedures that we are required to do so that we can reinforce clear and consistent behaviors from kindergarten through high

This technique is having a silent band rehearsal. During a silent rehearsal, the students are not allowed to talk in any way, shape or form to each other or to the director. Likewise, the band director can not speak to the students, but she can write things on the board or give hand motions in order to communicate with the students. This silence rehearsal, in my opinion, is very effective because the students are forced to pay attention to everything the band director is doing. It also calms the students down and keeps the classroom under…

I arrived at Easton School District’s Forks Elementary School at around 8:45 a.m. that morning, a few minutes before the children were let in for class, to observe a 4th grade classroom. The instructor for the class, Mrs. Powell met with me in the main office to walk me down to her classroom. The first thing I saw when walking into the classroom was all of the different learning tools around the room, Mrs. Powell's use of both chalkboards for different objectives was just one, along with open reading areas. The classroom was set up into different 4 person groups, in which the students were able to work together and collaborate. When I was getting settled into the classroom around 9:00 a.m., the students began to arrive officially starting…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

Tier one is about building relationships with the students in the classroom, their parents, and the colleagues that you work with. While observing I noticed that Miss Reinee is in regular communication with parents through out the day through either e-mail, phone, text, or journals. She also invites parents in for lunch on a regular basis to visit with their student for lunch. Another observation was that she is very eager to help colleagues when they need her assistance. For instance, another teacher needed help with filling out an IEP…

I traveled to the government center in toledo to attend a meeting with a small group of government students. Along the way, we got lost but eventually found the tall white building that one of our friends described to us as the government center. I found a parking spot and paid the parking meter. We walked the rest of the way in the unpredicted humid May weather. The building was refreshingly cool; the inside was presented in a sophisticated manner.…

The layout starts with the Smart Board located at the front of the class in which each student is able to see. There is also a rug for students to use in which they can sit on and work on the board. The room is arranged to use the Smart Board, but not as a distraction. The students are split up into groups of four, which is good for cooperative learning. There are also centers in which the students will be able to manipulate items and keep them within that area, allowing for organization.…

A number of students, while not included in the appendix, stated that they would like me to make sure that the class is quiet when I set them individual tasks to work on. It is the sole responsibility of me as a teacher to make sure that students can all be fully engaged in the learning and not disrupted by other factors, and it is very important for me to have my presence felt in the classroom. Pulda (2001) article was an great example of how finding the right teaching style can benefit both the students and the teacher greatly. Developing the “teacher voice” will enables me to communicate and deliver my lesson and contents better and gain control over the classroom and individual…

This was not a huge topic in classes as it was deemed common sense and that it was, I feel as if just by assuming the teaching role it gave you the power to manage a class. I learned plenty of management techniques from my associate and different techniques were effective for different classes. In one class there was music playing almost all the time and simply by pausing the music it got all the student’s attention and allowed you to give instructions. Another class responded well to a whistle to get their attention to stop the activity. Additionally a great way to speed the class up to get back on task was to say something like “last one to sit in the circle has to do (random exercise)”, it was amazing to see how quick that made some students move.…

The class had ten students from different grades. The classroom itself was right next to a cafeteria sometimes it is noisy. The noises take the attention of the students, especially in oral skills class where the focus is on listening and speaking skills.
